The Best Garage Floor Coatings

by on July 27, 2012

The garage is usually one of the few areas of the home that sees very little in the way of upgrades and remodels. Even those transforming their garage into a workshop usually don’t take all the steps they would if they were remodeling a room within their home. Perhaps the most overlooked area here is the garage floor. These are usually very basic, plain and boring. They are also easily stained and it takes very little to turn a gray garage floor into a spotted, splotched surface. Garage floor coatings can help with all of these concerns, but what are the best options?

Paint

Paint is perhaps the most common of all the garage floor coatings currently in use. It’s fast, easy and cheap. You only need a roller and a paint pan, and you can usually cover your entire floor in just a matter of hours. There are also paints that are formulated specifically to protect against oil and gasoline spills. However, paint might not be the right solution for your needs – it has its problems. While paint can protect your floor, it will also peel, bubble, chip and wear out very quickly. If you park your car in the garage, you’ll notice “hot tire peel” where the heat from your car’s tires peels the paint right off.

Epoxy

Epoxy is a popular solution for those looking at garage floor coatings. In a residential situation, epoxy can be applied with a roller, just like paint. However, it’s stronger and doesn’t peel and bubble the way that paint will. However, you’ll need to decide which type of epoxy coating is right for you. They range from poor quality but cheap to high quality and expensive, and they differ considerably in durability, application process and curing time.

Overlays

If you’re considering garage floor coatings, you might give some thought to stamped overlays. This material can withstand spills and liquids, can be stamped and colored easily to help you create a unique look for your room and it’s very durable. While there are kits out there that can help you apply your own coating, it’s best to work with a professional contractor here. Overlays can actually give you the look and feel of almost any other material, from tile to stone and more. In addition, they can be made nonslip so you can enjoy a safer environment.

Tile and Other Treatments

There are other garage floor coatings available as well. For instance, you’ll find that you can opt for a covering. These come in several different flavors, including composite tiles, plastic tiles, rubber tiles and more. Laying tile is perhaps the most time consuming option of all, but they can be a good solution for some, largely because replacing a damaged tile is relatively simple.

As you can see, there are numerous garage floor coatings and options out there. Take your time and choose the one that works best for your needs and your budget. Speak with a professional to really understand more about your options.
